Handstand Progression
Build the shoulder stability, wrist strength, and balance control to hold a freestanding handstand, starting from wall support and working toward independent balance.
Video demonstration coming soon
Prerequisites
- •10+ controlled pike push-ups
- •Hollow body hold for 30+ seconds
- •60-second wall handstand hold (chest or back to wall)
Progression Steps
- 1
Wrist Preparation
Before every session, mobilize the wrists with stretches and weight-shifting drills (rocking forward/back and side to side on flat hands). 2–3 minutes before each attempt.
- 2
Chest-to-Wall Hold
Kick up into a handstand facing the wall so your chest stays close to it, forcing a straight, stacked line with open shoulders. Hold 3–5 sets of 20–30 seconds.
- 3
Kick-Up Mechanics
Practice kicking up to a handstand away from the wall, focusing on a controlled, single-leg drive and landing your hands in a consistent, stacked position. 5–8 controlled kick-ups per set.
- 4
Freestanding Balance
Hold a freestanding handstand, using small increases and decreases in fingertip pressure to make micro-adjustments instead of kicking down. Hold 3–5 sets of 5–10 seconds, building up over time.
Common Mistakes
- •Arching the lower back into a 'banana' shape instead of keeping a straight, stacked line
- •Bending the elbows under load instead of keeping the arms fully locked out
- •Holding a closed shoulder angle instead of fully opening the shoulders overhead
- •Kicking up with too much force and overshooting the balance point
